Happy New Year!

After a much needed break from school I'm gearing up for winter semester (bunch of upper level psychology classes, should be fun) next week. The last semester was a bit too hectic for my tastes - In just a short 3 month period, I managed to accomplish a few things. Few of them were good.

On the positive side, I did quite well in school last semester, made dean's list and all that fun stuff. However, I managed to pretty much stop working out completely and gain 15 pounds as well.

Since I was smart this semester and didn't take any classes that require me to wake up at 6 a.m. , I'm hoping I can get back into a regular routine of eating right and exercising daily. I plan to keep my blog updated daily, as well as my food and exercise logs so anyone who wants can watch my results as they happen, the blog allows you to view my food and exercise logs as well as my weight and other health stats.

I was doing pretty well until the month of December, when the stress of finals eliminated any hope of hitting the treadmill. Spending more time at school meant I was eating more junk food (which is about the only type of food available on campus). Then came the piles of christmas cookies, candies and of course the family get-togethers with enough food to feed an army.

The New Shoes

After 3 years and probably 1500+ miles, I finally retired my old Asics Gel-Kayanos, and replaced them with a newer model. Funny how you don't realize how bad your shoes are when they gradually get worse and worse over a period of years. The new shoes are like running on air, and they have me back running a bit more mechanically correct as the guidance features on my old shoes were pretty worn out.

I figure, now that I have the new shoes there is really no good excuse for me not to run every day - I can run a ten miler in these shoes and not have the least bit of leg or foot pain afterwards. I can't stress enough how important it is to have a great pair of running shoes. And to replace them a little more often than I do.

New Eating Plan

It felt good to get back to logging all my food intake and exercise today, I have really been slacking on this in the past few months. It's easy to keep a food log when you are doing the right thing most of the time. Once things like potato chips and cookies crept into my diet, I wasn't so fond of my little log anymore. But hey - new year, new attitude, right?

I encourage anyone trying to lose weight to follow along with my progress here, I try to keep my food intake realistic - I don't live off tofu and bean sprouts, but I watch portions of not-so-great choices. As I enter my foods into the log, I get a good idea of what else I can eat later in the day. And when I know everyone can see what I'm eating, it makes me think twice before putting something into my stomach.

New Toy: Pur Flavor Options Purifier

The wife and I had some gift cards to spend after Christmas, and we have had our eyes on this unit for quite some time. We finally decided to buy it, since we technically weren't spending OUR money on it. The wife loves the flavored water, and this model comes with a little attachment where you can spray a few squirts of flavoring into your glass while it fills.

We live in a 80 year old house with old pipes, and I have always felt that our water tastes a little funny. I tend to have really hypersensetive taste buds, and there's just something about the water that doesn't taste right.

I have done several side by side comparisons, and can quite honestly taste a difference between the filtered and unfiltered water - it has lost the weird sour flavor it had before. The little spray-in flavoring adds a nice flavor to the water, and makes it incredibly easy to drink enough water each day. The cartridges make it a cheaper option that buying flavored bottled water, and is definately much more convenient. For those times when you are craving something sweet like candy, a glass of calorie-free fruit flavored water can really do the trick.
